John Chater
John Chater is a small scale farmer and plant biology PhD candidate in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside.
He was raised in Ventura County, where his family owns a small avocado and pomegranate farm.
John did his undergraduate work at University of California, Santa Barbara and his MS work in agriculture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo under fruit science professor
Dr. Lauren Garner.
John’s current and past research is on pomegranate, although he has participated in avocado research and consulting endeavors on avocado and citrus crops.
Mr. Chater’s grandfather, S. John Chater, was a pomegranate breeder who selected the soft-seeded pomegranate ‘Eversweet,’ among several others, including
‘Ambrosia,’ ‘Purple Heart,’ ‘Green Globe,’ and ‘Golden Globe.’

Pomegranates
John will briefly talk about his grandfather's contributions and where he fits into the family.
Then he will cover the research that he is doing at UC Riverside with his cultivar evaluation, which includes field trials and laboratory work.
During this portion, he will present some unpublished data collected on pomegranates from the US collection and his first year harvest at UCR.
He will also present what is known about pomegranate production and why it is considered a drought tolerant crop.
Lastly he will present past research on the subject, perhaps quickly reviewing two or three articles.
